Mitkumar Patel was scheduled to begin studying in Sheffield but was found dead in London’s Thames.
A 23-year-old Indian student, Mitkumar Patel, who moved to the UK nine weeks ago for his studies was found dead on the bank of the Thames river in London on November 21. His family reported him missing on November 17.
A passerby found his body in the river Thames near the Canary Wharf area of east London. They called the Metropolitan Police who called paramedics who declared Mitkumar dead.
Mitkumar, also known as Mit, by his near and dear ones, moved to the UK on September 19 and was living with them in Plaistow, east London. His cousins are raising money in order to repatriate his body to India to allow his parents and sisters to say their final goodbyes and finish his last rites.
Mit was expected to move to Sheffield on November 20 to start his degree course at the Sheffield Hallam University and a part-time job at Amazon. His UK-based cousin became worried when Mitkumar failed to return home from a daily walk. They found out that Mitkumar left his house keys at home.
They reported him missing to the police on November 18 and immediately began contacting missing persons charities and started pasting posters in areas he frequented with posters and flyers.
Parth, Mit’s cousin, said in the days before his death Mit sent a relative a series of voice messages and they found that in those messages, Mit outlined a plan on how to end his life.
“He belonged to a farmer family and used to live in a village. So we decided to do fundraising to help out his family and to send his body to India,” Parth wrote on the fundraising page.
“Officers believe they know the identity of the deceased. The death is not believed to be suspicious,” a spokesperson for Scotland Yard said, confirming that police, paramedics and the fire brigade responded to reports a man’s body was found on the riverbank at Caledonian Wharf.
