In a setback for the Bharat Rashtra Samithi(BRS) in Telangana, more than twelve former legislators which include former ministers from the K Chandrashekar Rao cabinet joined the Congress party today.
The development comes ahead of Assembly elections in the state later this year.
The leaders met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Rahul Gandhi in the presence of general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal and Telangana Congress chief A Revanth Reddy. “Telangana Congress is getting bigger traction. So many leaders from various parties want to join Congress. This clearly indicates that Congress will form the government in Telangana. Wait and see, others will also join Congress,” said Congress general secretary KC Venugopal.
From Congress, the party president Malikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi were also present as the leaders decided to join the Congress party.
The list o f leaders who joined the Congress include former MP Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, former minister Jupally Krishna Rao, ex-MLAs Panyam Venkateswarlu, Koram Kanakaiah, Rakesh Reddy and Kota Ram Babu.
Also, as many as 35 BRS leaders, including former MP Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and ex-minister Telangana government Jupally Krishna Rao, announced their intention to join the Congress and met the party’s top leadership here on Monday, sources said.
The Bharat Rashtra Samithi leaders will formally join the Congress at a public rally in Khammam, Telangana expected to be held in the first week of July with the likely presence of AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi. Reddy was a BRS MP from Khammam in the previous Lok Sabha polls.
